The Super Collies set to Wow on the America’s Got Talent Finals

September 19, 2017 By Susan Nation Leave a Comment

Sara and The Super Collies Are Living the Dream!

What an incredible journey for Sara and the Super Collies. Let's make her dream come true. Please VOTE!!
Hero Sara and Simon on #AGT Follow @thesupercollies

We are so elated to announce that our good friends, Sara Carson and the Super Collies, will be on the Finals of America’s Got Talent Tuesday 19th, on NBC (City TV in Canada).

You may have seen the Super Collies featured on Backseat Barkers and Talent Hounds, and it’s because these pups are the most talented trick dogs in the world and very generous friends.

We have followed Sara and Hero’s incredible journey for the past 5 years. Sara told me when I first met her that she wanted to be on America’s Got Talent one day. Today, I am sitting waiting to watch her rock the Finals- woohoo!

https://youtu.be/CtVPTte-5sU

Even as a teenager, Sara had such drive and was so determined, and she LOVED Hero. It was easy to see her talent and her passion for training, performing, photography and graphic design.

Hero’s Story

Even as a puppy, Hero was already so well trained and such a special dog. Their bond was amazing. Sara never shied away from a challenge and was always ready to help me on all sorts of projects and events. She particularly helped me with training my little rescue pug Kilo with positive reward based methods though an online group, and in person. Her support was invaluable and he is a different dog today with lots of cute tricks up his sleeve.

Her journey has not always been easy or 100% smooth, but it has been incredible and the hard work is paying off.

Sara and Hero appeared on numerous big US TV shows like Letterman and thrived in the spotlight. We did local Fashion Shows, Talent and Trick Competitions and Showcases and Videos and TV segments together. Sara progressed from competitor to judge and host at Canadian Pet Expo and went on to tour in the US.

how to be safe when traveling with your dog

Most recently, this summer we worked on travel safety tips – see HERE, blogs and videos for The BackSeat Barkers and Talent Hounds as the Super Collies toured the US performing and teaching.

America’s Got Talent Auditions

Hero and Sara auditioned for the show on TV back in June, wowing the crowd with an elaborate routine including sword fights and a wide sample of the hundreds of tricks Hero knows. We only got to see the amazing show in August. It won over Simon Cowell, a dog lover who knows talent when he sees it. He gave Sara a big hug on stage. We were so pleased when our friends were put through to the next round, but we knew the Super Collies “Got Talent!”

They delivered this awesome routine below including Loki the Puppy to wow the audience and judges again and make it through to the semi-finals. I admit, there were cheers and tears of happiness in our house.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiXsZAZx_6U&t=73s

Loki’s Story

We met Loki just over a year ago for the first time at Canadian Pet Expo as a little puppy. He already had star quality. Look at him go!

This is a great opportunity for Sara, Hero and Loki. Congratulations, we know you’ll rock it!

Please Watch the Finals and Vote for our Heroes, the Super Collies! Let’s Make A Dream Come True.

How to Keep Your Dogs Safe When Travelling

May 30, 2017 By Susan Nation Leave a Comment

How to be safe and smart when traveling with dogs
Sara and The Suer Collies

Tips for Travelling with the Super Collies

Before we get into our adventures, I think it’s important to review what is needed to make a road trip successful and safe for both you and your dog/s! My dogs travel with more luggage than I do!

Let’s Go Over The Basics

First things first, you’re going to want to either get your pup a car restraint to keep them secure in the case of a sudden stop or accident.  You can use a harness that attaches to a seatbelt or a crate or carrier. Dogs can be badly injured or even killed if they become a projectile in a collision, so you want to make sure your pet is as safe and secure as you are.

The Center for Pet Safety has done studies on several of the most popular carriers and crates for travel so you can check out your preferred carrier and see for yourself how they hold up in a crash test scenario here.

the super collies in front of saras car

The Kurgo and Sleepy Pod equipment both seem to test well.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car in the Hot Sun

Never leave your dog in the car alone on a hot day, even for 10 minutes with the window open, as a car can heat up so fast and this can be deadly.

Once you arrive somewhere hot, watch for hot pavement and overheating. You may want to check out some of these dog heat safety tips from Talent Hounds for useful info like how to spot the signs of overheating.

Always Pick up after your dog and keep pet-friendly spaces safe for everyone!

Leaving poop is gross and can be dangerous.

Microchip Your Dog

If you’re going to be taking your dog far away from home you should think about getting them microchipped and making sure the contact information is up to date.

Keep your Dog Safe from Bugs and Diseases

Be sure to check that all your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. Investigate what bugs or diseases like heart worms, ticks, fleas, mosquitos or flu might be a threat where you are travelling and look into ways to protect yourself and your dog.

.

My Travel Essentials Include:

  • Food – You may not be able to find your dog’s favorite brand on the road easily so make sure you have a decent supply with you. Switching foods around can cause your dog digestive issues. Use a waterproof container.
  • Water – You want to make sure you and your dog stay hydrated and keep a supply of clean water handy.
  • Non-spill bowl(s)
  • Treats.
  • Supplements and any medications.
  • Toys, discs and trick gear.
  • A Pet First Aid Kit (I carry several)
  • Clean Up Bags.
  • Blankets.
  • Cleaning Supplies- Because accidents do happen!
  • A camera and a phone to document your adventures
  • Hero playing with his new MOHOC Camera
  • Bed(s)
  • Leash(es)- Do some research about where you’re going beforehand as some places require 6 ft leashes.
  • Collars and up to date tags.
  • Sunscreen (for you and your dog).
  • Calming spray and/or toys- This can be a big help if you have an anxious dog, here’s a post about products that can be helpful for soothing reactive dogs found at the Global Pet Expo this year.
  • Vet records and emergency vet and contact numbers – In case of emergency if you’re far away from home you want to be prepared to get your pet any treatment they may need. Pet MD has lists of Vets by location. There’s also the ASPCA poison control hotline which you can call 24/7 if your pet ingests something you fear might be toxic: (888) 426-4435
  • Towel in case your dog gets wet

and I am sure I missed something…

the super collies sleeping in the car

Now, if sleeping in your car isn’t something you want to do, don’t worry!!

Thankfully the Red Roof Inns are not only affordable and nice, but pets stay FREE! We have enjoyed them a few times in the past month.

They have over 345 locations spread out across the USA.

Fishstick the Celebrity Pug

A Pug’s Heartwarming Story From Rescue Dog to Much Loved Celebrity Actor

Talent Hounds Rescues Rock TV Episode

You may recognize the handsome pug Fishstick from Talent Hound’s Rescues Rock TV episode. That is where he got his first big break in showbusiness.

Backseat Barkers Role

Now he’s back starring in the new comedy series Backseat Barkers.

A Lucky Pup’s Twist of Fate

Fishstick is a small pug with a big story to tell. Once in a foster home, now the talented dog struts down red carpets and makes celebrity guest appearances at Woofstock. He is always greeted by his adoring fans who love to snap pictures and shake paws with him. Fishstick really can rock a runway; it’s hard not to fall in love at first sight with his charismatic personality and big brown eyes!

Fishstick was recently interviewed by the team at Petguide.com, sharing exclusive tidbits about fame, love, and overcoming life’s hurdles. We had a ton of fun on set, and Fishstick was a natural in the hot-seat. This pug was born to be on camera! Fishstick loves that he can be an advocate for the sweet dogs that are in shelters ready to be loved by the right human.

Fishstick’s rescue rags to riches tale is both heartwarming and inspiring. One of our mission’s at Talent Hounds is to promote adopting rescues and to highlight their many talents. Fishstick currently lives in Toronto with his loving family, but he didn’t always live such a glamorous life.
Fishstick and Co
Fishstick Loves All the Attention!
Tim, Fishstick’s dad and trainer, told us his story.

Fishstick’s Rescue Story

Like many Rescue Dogs, Fishstick’s past is a bit of a mystery to us. When his original family turned him over to Pugalug, The Toronto Pug Rescue, all they were told was that they wanted him to go to a new family who could give him the attention they felt he needed.

That’s when he came to our attention. We had never owned a dog before but we started looking for a rescue pug in particular due to the influence of a wonderful pug named ‘Marvin’ who lives right across the street from us. We spent more and more time with Marvin and his wonderful owner and it got to the point where we would be ‘borrowing’ him for walks and play dates. That’s when we realized we wanted a pug of our own.

Fishstick Smiles

After agreeing that a Rescue was the only way we wanted to proceed and after research online, we found that there was a Toronto Pug Rescue organization (PugALug) and on the website was a wonderful set of pics and little write up about this cute young pug who was in Foster care. We instantly fell in love with him and prepared our application that very day.

The Rescue’s policy is that only when a pug is ready to adopt could we submit an application. Between us we checked the website about every ten minutes for about two weeks until the fateful day that he was ready to adopt.

Fishstick Headshot
Looking good, Fishstick!

We got a call from his Foster mom later that week asking if she and the dog could come and visit.

We arranged a Saturday get together and upon their arrival, the little fellow came into our home and immediately jumped up into my partner’s arms melting her heart and mine instantly.

The visit lasted for about an hour and then they were on their way. Marvin from across the street made an ‘unannounced’ visit while the home visit was underway to try and help seal the deal. (To this day Fishstick and Marvin are the best of friends!)

The next few hours were absolutely agonizing. We had no idea if he was going to visit other people or if there would be competition for him. After what seemed like an eternity (only actually a few hours!), we got a call from his Foster Mom – he was ours if we wanted him and we absolutely DID want him.

 Screen-shot-2016-05-31-at-10.39.57-AM

The next morning we drove to get him, and took Marvin in tow with us.
Since that Sunday there has not been a single day where he has been separated from us. And that is how it will be from here on out.
Since then we always give him the attention he wants and we work hard to give him an enriching life. He goes to High Park here in Toronto on weekends where he runs the trails and hangs out at Dog Hill.
He goes to the monthly ‘Toronto Pug Grumble’ and to events like Woofstock to meet up with his fellow pugs.
He even gets to hang out with celebrity Pugs like Doug the Pug, pictured with Tim at Woofstock and his co-stars Lottie and Jess on the red carpet.

Most importantly we make sure that Fishstick gets to go to just about every fundraising event and meet-up that Pugalug Pug Rescue hosts: from ‘Pug-entine’ to ‘Pug-mas’ to (our favourite) ‘Pug-o-ween’.

Fishstick was just turning two years of age when he came into our lives in 2012. Now he’s almost 6 and a half. We are looking forward to having him in our lives for many years ahead and we hope that the work he is doing with Susan and Talent Hounds will help convince people that Rescue Dogs should not just be an option, they should always be the FIRST option anybody looks into when they are thinking of bringing a Dog into their homes and families.

PugALug Pug Rescue

I have admired PugALug Pug Rescue for years now and really love to support them in their efforts. The group of volunteers is committed to helping rescued pugs by providing medical care, love, fostering, comfort, food and companionship. The dog rescue organization helps bridge the gap between a pug’s past life and its future forever home.

It’s their love and dedication that allows so many pugs not only find a forever home but adjust to a new life seamlessly. The group is at many dog events around Ontario and are always happy to share stories and tips for owning a pug. PugALug is able to fund the fostering, medical needs and rehoming of pugs and pug mixes solely through donations provided by generous supporters in the community. Susan and I plan that some revenue from the Backseat Barkers project will go to PugALug if successful and we will also work to build awareness.

They are an amazing group who work hard fighting for pugs in need. They also happen to throw fun parties to help raise money and awareness, and to celebrate the pug dog breed.

Adopt A Pug

A pet is a life commitment that should bring you joy, love and lots of fun. Pugs make wonderful pets but do require lots of work.  Talk to breeders, rescues and other owners who can share their experiences with you too. We have included anecdotes and tips from community members about their dogs in our handy BREED LIBRARY. We also have a fun BREED QUIZ you can try to see if your match with the “party pug” like me.

Always consider rescuing and adopting first, there are plenty of Pugs just like Fishstick who are waiting for loving families. #ADOPTDONTSHOP #Rescues Rock

I fostered then adopted my pug Kilo through Homeward Bound Rescue. Fostering a dog can be just as rewarding and helpful for rescue groups who are looking for homes to place newly rescued dogs in while they find forever homes.

Behind the Scenes as the Backseat Barkers Take Toronto

Behind the Scenes as the Backseat Barkers Take Toronto

The Talent Hounds crew was on location May 29th at Toronto’s Woodbine Park for Woofstock, then at the luxury Fairmont Royal York Hotel, filming our new comedy series “Backseat Barkers”.

Behind the Scenes with the Backseat Barkers

Backseat Barkers Episode – Taking Toronto

In this episode of our award-nominated series, the blended family of step parents and furkids visit Toronto. While Hugh goes off to a dentistry conference, his girlfriend Jess, Lottie the Border Collie and Fishstick the Pug check out Woofstock and enjoy the suite life at their hotel: the Fairmount Royal York.

Fishstick, our star rescue pug, caught up with some other very cute pugs like Miss Edie the Pug and Tuesday the Pug at the PugALug Pug Rescue booth.

He seemed to be enjoying the celebrity pug lifestyle and invited a few ladies back to his hotel!

They say stylish pugs are happy pugs. Doesn’t Fishstick look just debonair in his Handmade In The Hammer Canada bow-tie? Kilo the Pug has one to match and we gave one to Doug the Pug too.

Fishstick enjoyed the “A list” treatment all day. Our kind friend Tanya from Bullwrinkles gifted us a massive bone (almost as big as Fishstick) and some liver treats.

“Jess” spoke with Tanya about the delicious healthy Bullwrinkles and Barnsdale Farms Select Treats and Chews. Fishstick the Pug and Kilo the Pug are huge fans of their products.

Lottie’s talented trainer and Jess’ friend Taylor arranged to come to Toronto and meet us at Woofstock so Lottie could catch up with her BFF, Grizzly. These two hugging are just too cute.

Fishstick was surprisingly calm when he got to meet mega celebrity and social media mogul, Doug the Pug.  (An exclusive behind the scenes interview with Doug will be coming soon!)

Like a good sister should, Lottie cheered Fishstick on as he competed in the Pug Races, an adorable and popular event at Woofstock. “Go Fish go!”

Lottie is always ready to show off her amazing tricks for our camera. Look at this talented girl sit pretty! Fishstick may need a little work on his core to keep up.

We were very excited to bump into our friend Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund and watch the #nobiteisright presentation. We were reminded to keep clear of troublesome ticks while filming in the park and to check for them at the end of the day.

No Bite Is Right at woofstockAfter a busy day outside in the hot sun, we headed back to the Fairmount Royal York Hotel downtown. What a gorgeous oasis! It was so nice to relax in the air conditioning and lay on the plush beds.

Our very own Rescue to Royalty hero Fishstick the Pug was treated to a luxury robe and gift basket by the hotel. He felt like a pampered celeb! Lottie was a little envious.

About Backseat Barkers

Follow the adventures of The Backseat Barkers- a newly blended fictional family – Mom(Jess 25), Dad(Hugh 28) and the step-kids Fishstick the Pug and Lottie the Border Collie– on their road trip together across Ontario. Like step-kids everywhere, they are both a little jealous, they don’t like the changes in housing, rules and parenting styles and they are definitely not as keen on their new step-sibling as the parents are on each other. And they don't mind sharing their opinions.

We will also share behind the scenes news, tips on travel and pet care, real rescue stories (including Fishstick the Pug) product reviews, and other useful information for millennial pet lovers.
